** CBD is the Central Business District, which is essentially the
downtown Athens
area.
In addition to the rates charged to the customers based
on their service level, refuse is required to be placed
in authorized bags (clear bags with black text/writing
with a black drawsting handle) that are purchased for
$1.50 each. The cost of the bags covers the disposal
cost, the cost to manufacture the bags and a small administration
cost.
NEW

Athens Downtown Development Authority's
Parking Services Office
133 E.Washington Street
Athens-Clarke County Solid Waste Department
1005 College Avenue

billed to your water/garbage account (except at Parking
Services). Bags can be bought by the case ($150/100
bags) and delivered to your business at no charge. Call
the Solid Waste Department at (706) 613-3501, ext. 0
for bag information and delivery.
If you have items such as cooking oil, fluorescent bulbs or large bulky
items (such as carpets or sinks) call (706) 613-3501, extension 304 and arrange for a special pickup. These items CANNOT be placed out with your
regular garbage. Please Note: The Solid Waste Department accepts 5-gallon containers of old, cooking grease from commercial customers for proper disposal. The cost is $3.00 for a pick-up (in a 5-gallon container).
RECYCLING COLLECTION
Recycling is an easy way to cut down
on your solid waste diposal costs. By keeping items
out of your trash, you should be able to cut down on
the number of authorized garbage bags (clear bags with
black text/writing with a black drawsting - that cost
$1.50 each) and limit the frequency of your garbage
pickups, therefore, saving money. Recyclables are collected
at no additional charge from commercial curbside customers.
Recycling
Tips and Requirements:
All bottles and cans may be "mixed"
and recycled together. You do not need to separate them;
however, you must keep them separate from PAPER items
and free of trash. Please try to make sure that bottles
and cans are empty before recycling. Place bottles and
cans in a clear (or translucent) plastic bag. You may
use a rollcart for recycling if you have a large amount
of bottles and cans. Please call our office at (706)
613-3501, extension 315 if you need a rollcart for your
recyclables or if you need clear bags for recycling
(they are FREE). The clear recycling bags have green
text with a black drawstring (not to be confused with
the clear garbage bags).
All paper items can be "mixed" and recycled together. You do not
need to separate them; however you must keep paper items separate from BOTTLES
AND CANS and free of trash. Try to keep paper items dry. Place paper in
a clear (or translucent) plastic bag. You may flatten corrugated cardboard and
place underneath other paper recycling - you do not need to place it in a bag.
NOTE: If you have trash mixed in with recyclables,
it contaminates them and will be considered trash in an unauthorized bag. You
may be cited for this violation. Unless you have been notified otherwise,
recycle only the items listed at "What Can Be Recycled".
Call (706) 613-3501 if you have any questions about the commercial curbside program.
